Nature Literacy & Plant Wonder
An Online Course for Children

Join Sacred Warrior teacher, Jessica Strom for a creative course designed to foster nature literacy and inspire a sense of wonder through relationships with local plants.

Students will learn plant identification, explore the many ways to listen, and learn from nature, and engage creativity through visual art and creative writing. The plants spotlighted will be ones that are under our feet, and around us during the time of the course. Jessica will design the material seasonally and share folklore and fairy tales about the plants we are working with. Each student will select a primary plant or tree to spend time with throughout the course.

This interactive, remote course is geared toward later elementary-aged students (Grades 3-4 or Grades 4-5) with a limit of 5 students in each cohort to start. Classes will be 1 hr long for 7-weeks. Each class will start and end with a brief meditation or mindfulness exercise. Students will come away with knowledge about the living Earth and have original pieces works of art, story, or poetry inspired plant life around them. The course will be offered each season.

Jessica Strom is an herbalist and pianist. She also worked as a counselor, a PreK-12 educator, and an editorial assistant for psychological scholarly writings. In October 2020, she released an album entitled Sky Improvisations inspired by the world between us and the stars. Her studies as an herbalist focus on trusting intuition, learning from plants, and spiritual connection to ancestors. Jessica comes from Tagalog and Ilonggo lineage and is learning the precolonial mythology and folklore of her motherland, what is called the Philippines today. She hears her soul clearly and feels portals to liminality when she is listening to the Land. As an educator, Jessica hopes her guidance will help students towards a reciprocal connection with the earth through the plant life around them, to discover plant lore, and to be inspired to create from this connection.
